5 Myths About Boudoir Photography

Every industry has its myths, and boudoir photography is no different. With instant access to everything available online, it can be hard to know what’s true and what’s fiction. Each boudoir studio has a different approach & philosophy, so you’ll want to make sure you find a photographer that aligns with your vision. But here are five boudoir photography myths, debunked.

Myth #1: It's Porn

One of the most common myths about boudoir photography is that it’s porn. This is simply not true! Boudoir photography is about empowering women to love themselves and their bodies. The photos I create are an artistic portrayal of beauty just like the famous drawings or paintings of Botticelli, Picasso, or Matisse. In the same way that figurative art isn’t considered pornographic, boudoir photography is its own form of artistic expression.

Myth #2: It Needs to be for Someone Else

While boudoir photos make a great gift, these sessions are not solely for the benefit of others. Boudoir photography is all about loving who you are, and each photo is about celebrating you and telling your unique story. If you want to share that celebration with someone, great! If you’re booking a boudoir session as a present for yourself, that’s equally great!

Myth #3: You Need the Perfect Body

Every body is perfect for a boudoir photo session. There is no ‘right’ type when it comes to women’s boudoir portraits—this is all about loving your one-of-a-kind self. Whether you’re curvy, petite or anywhere in between, you deserve beautiful photographs of yourself!

Myth #4: You Need Expensive Lingerie

Some of my favorite spots to grab beautiful lingerie are not expensive. If you’re working with a budget check out Forever21 (now exclusively online) where you’ll find gorgeous body suits for under $20. Amazon is also a great choice for boudoir photo sessions because they are affordable, arrive quickly (gotta love Amazon Prime), and offer free returns (let’s face it, Amazon sizing charts are not always consistent).  Online lingerie retailers always have a clearance section. Check out the sale page at Victoria's Secret, Fredericks of Hollywood, BlueBella and others. Next, you can borrow from my lingerie closet filled with one-piece items, robes, vintage pieces and shoes. Lastly, you can also find unexpected treasures at vintage or consignment stores. These photos feature items purchased from my lingerie closet, all purchased for under $20.

Myth #5: You Have to Wear Lingerie

You don’t have to wear lingerie during your shoot. I always suggest clients start with their favorite items in their closets: a sexy dress, off the shoulder sweater, favorite pair of jeans, sheer scarf. Your boudoir shoot is all about y-o-u and what you love. If lingerie isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Another great idea for boudoir is to use white sheets or to create fine art nudes. I’m always surprised at how many clients ask to take off their clothes for a few nudes. And you can bet, these are often their favorite images!
